Dental Care for Cats

By Barbara Lombardi

How many of you brush your cat's teeth? About two thirds of all cats over three years old have some degree of dental disease.

Cats have 30 teeth in total. They use their long canine teeth to grab and carry their prey and their back teeth much as we do to chew their food.

Although they normally do not get cavities, cats can get tartar build-up from plaque. This can be one of the main causes of gum disease, also known as gingivitis. Gingivitis can be painful at the gum line and can contribute to tooth loss. In addition the infection in a cat's gums can also invade her body and make her ill.

Here's what you can do:

1. Slowly get your cat or kitten used to you putting your hands around her face and in her mouth. Once she seems to be comfortable with this (and it may take as long as a week or so) the next step is to dip your finger into a tuna can and get some of the juice. Gently rub your fingers around the gumline of your cat's mouth. She'll love this part.

2. Next, wrap a piece of gauze around your finger and rub your cat's teeth gently. Use the same techniqie as above by dipping the gauze into the tuna juice. This is just for flavor so that this experience is an enjoyable one for your cat.

3. Once she has become accustomed to this procedure, you are free to select a toothpaste for her to use. DO NOT use human toothpaste! And find a finger toothbrush at any local pet store to use for your cat. This si simply a small brush that fits on the tip of your finger which makes it easier for you to get around all the areas of your cat's mouth.

Good dental hygiene will keep your cat healthy and save you a lot of time any money in the long run.
