Puppy Arthritis
By Barbara Lombardi
So many people ask if puppies can get arthritis, because it is not something you usually associate with youth. However, the answer is that puppyhood is the time we should consider how to prevent our older dogs from the onset of arthritis.
Arthritis is a very broad term which actually is an inflammation of a joint that may also have some pain and swelling. Larger breeds such as Labradors, Bermese Mountain, Newfoundlands, etc are especially vulnerable to arthritis in their latter years. Many of you have heard the term hip dysplasia. This is a slow degenerative joint disease that affects hips, elbows, knees and joints in the foot.
Here's what you can do to help your puppy:
- Make sure you do not over feed your pup. Maintaining proper weight is one of the best ways you can help your dog in many health areas. Obesity can speed up the onset of arthritis contributing the the dog's weak joints and causing the dog to have trouble supporting the extra weight.
- Watch out for slippery floors or weather. Traction helps puppies give their bones and joints the time they need to develop. A slippery surface causes their legs to fan out putting undue stress on the joints.
- Make sure your puppy gets regular exercise, but not too strenuous. No running or jogging until they have developed. Long walks are fine and swimming is great if you have the opportunity.
- There are any number of supplements you can add to a pup's diet, ask your vet or your local pet supermarket to recommend a few.
