Horse Blankets and Their Use -- I’m assuming that many people debate over whether or not they should use a horse blanket during the cold and/or wet winter months. The reason I’m assuming this is because I used to debate over it, too, sometimes feeling cruel when it was cold and I’d look out the window and see my horse out there in the midst of it; other times I felt that perhaps I was pampering my horse too much and she was so much tougher than I gave her credit for.

What Color Is A Horse? -- The words for a horse’s coat color have very specific meanings. A bay horse has a body coat that is a shade of brown with black legs, mane, and tail. Within the bay group, there are blood bays which is a more dark reddish shade of brown and bright bays which can look a golden brown. There are also black bays, which might appear to most people as a black horse. Truly black horses are a more rare color.

A Horse's Body Language -- Mostly anyone who has been near to a horse has been aware of their eyes-how steady, unafraid, and sometimes even unnerving they are. And I've always personally thought that a horse's eyes have the most fascinating texture-when you get up close and really study them, you can see it!

Christmas Treats for Your Horse -- We tend to think that, due to movies and/or stereotypes, horses love sugar cubes and carrots, as well as apples. While this may be true with a lot of horses, there are also many who don't like these things.

My Favorite Breed -- They say that Quarter Horses as a breed began back around colonial times when people would have horse races for a quarter mile. As I always heard it, people began breeding a horse that was stronger, and faster in the shorter run, sort of in spurts (unlike Thoroughbreds, who are bred for speed in longer distances). So the Quarter Horse was born, a typically muscular, strong, and fast breed.

Saddle Sores -- The infamous saddle sore. I've had several people discuss the issue with me recently--they've asked me, "What exactly ARE saddle sores?" and "Are they normal for people to get when they ride horses?" Hopefully I can address these issues here.

Echo's Transition --  Echo was a flea-bitten gray horse, with brown speckles everywhere, and crystal clear hairs in her mane and tail. We met in October, 1976, when she was a broodmare on an Arabian farm in New York State. A beginner at riding doesn't usually start out with a novice horse, but I fell in love at first sight of her.

The Benefits of Therapeutic Horseback Riding --  Since the dawn of time, mankind has had an interesting relationship with animals. In some ways, the history of modern man is intimately linked to our interaction with animals. Dog's, for instance, have long been considered man's best friend. Any dog owner will gladly confirm this for you. Cat's, too, have been living in close quarters with man for literally thousands of years.

What is the Dress Code for Dressage Shows? --  If you are new to dressage and want to start showing, it is important to learn and follow the dress code. It is pretty specific and, in dressage shows, you don't get points for being creative and standing out from the crowd. Some judges are very traditional, and they are distracted by anything not following the "Norm". Use your creative outfits for schooling. The dress code is also detailed in the rules for Dressage from USEF, so if you have questions about this advice, refer to the rules. These suggestions are based on current experience at 3 star shows in Northern California (2003-2006).
