Saddle Sores

By Caryn A. Tate

The infamous saddle sore. I've had several people discuss the issue with me recently--they've asked me, "What exactly ARE saddle sores?" and "Are they normal for people to get when they ride horses?" Hopefully I can address these issues here.

Firstly, most people will acquire saddle sores when they first begin to ride. After all, it's a brand new activity that requires a lot of muscle and a lot of, well...rubbing. At least at first. Saddle sores are, then, fairly common for people who are just learning to ride. As your riding skills improve, your saddle sore problems will decrease. Most saddle sores are caused by bouncing, and just a general response by your skin to this sometimes rough new activity. But as your skills improve, the bouncing will stop.

Saddle sores can also be acquired, however, after you've gained those riding skills. If you're only used to riding for half an hour a day, for instance, and then suddenly you go on an all-day ride, you may get some saddle sores.

Basically, the more you use your muscles, the less trouble you'll have with those painful sores. If you know ahead of time that you're going on a long, all-day ride, practice. Be gentle with yourself and give yourself time to get used to the long hours in the saddle. Gradually work your way up from your normal allotted time for riding until you can go on the day ride with no problems.

About the Author:

I have lived around and worked with horses my entire life, and learned how to ride when I was a small child. Riding and training horses are great loves of mine, and I enjoy helping other people overcome training issues with their horses. I love working with horses and developing relationships with them, as well as talking about them with other people who are as passionate about the subject as I am.
