Pet Rabbits Care
By Barbara Lombardi
Many people purchase rabbits in the spring. But the traditional Easter Bunny is more than just a whimsical purchase. Owners need to fully accept responsibility for these animals.
Facts to consider:
Rabbits live for only five to seven years. Consider what it is you are going to need and whether your decision is just a whim or do you really want a rabbit as a pet. The saddest thing I have seen all too often in the past is that baby rabbits are purchased on a spur of the moment, but then the owners end up neglecting them.
Here's some advice on caring for your pet rabbit:
- Take the time to develop a relationship with your pet rabbit. A rabbit that sits in a cage and is never handled is not going to be a good pet and will be very skittish.
- One of the biggest issues with rabbit care is what they are eating and how much of it. A diet of pellets alone can cause a rabbit to become obese. Rabbits are herbivores, so combining pellets with fresh grass, hay and vegetables is a more suitable diet. Also, make sure they have fresh water.
- Housing for your rabbit should include a well-designed wire indoor cage that allows enough room for hopping around during the day; also, include a box that fits in the cage so the rabbit can hide.
- It is highly recommended to have your pet rabbit spayed or neutered. Approximately 80 percent of unspayed female rabbits will end up getting and dying of a uterine cancer, and spaying your female rabbit early decreases the chances of developing that cancer. Plus, spaying also eliminates the potential problems associated with breeding and complications of breeding. As for male rabbits, neutering is not so much a health issue as it is a behavioral issue to prevent the rabbit from marking up the house or becoming more aggressive.
