Flying with your Pet
By Barbara Lombardi
When your book your flight tell your travel agent or your airline that you are traveling with your pet. Get a health certificate from your veterinarian. Sedatives or tranquilizers may be necessary, so have some handy in case your pet acts nervous or gets over anxious.
There are just a few basic rules to keep in mind when taking your pet on a plane:
- Ask the airline you are using what their crate requirements are.
- Make sure the crate is airline safe and clearly marked for identification.
- Check out the type of cargo that will be traveling with your pet. Dry ice fumes, for example, can be lethal in an enclosed space.
- Try to get a non-stop flight to reduce the number of times airline personnel will have to move your pet.
- Do not feed your pet for eight hours before the flight.
Have a wonderful trip!
